Opioids have devastated families across Utah, mine included. But a quiet shift is happening—one story, one patient at a time. Cannabis, once villainized, is now offering something opioids never could: control, clarity, and a way forward. This isn’t about politics or culture wars—it’s about survival, and the plant that’s helping thousands of Utahns finally find relief.
Before medical cannabis became an option, Utah ranked among the top 10 states for opioid-related deaths. In 2016 alone, 466 lives were lost—a number etched into my memory forever. One of them was my father, a painful reminder of lives cut short before cannabis had the chance to offer hope and healing.
Every day, I hear stories of resilience from patients like Dylan Roe, a Marine we recently featured who reclaimed his life after breaking free from a mountain of prescriptions. With cannabis, he’s found control, purpose, and the life he deserves. And I can’t help but wonder—could my father have found that same hope? It’s a bittersweet thought that sticks with me. But if the stories we share help even one person find a better path, then every effort, every page, will have been worth it.
While Utah’s national ranking has improved, the crisis isn’t over. This issue isn’t just about those who have found relief through cannabis—it’s about those who never had the opportunity to discover its potential. By honoring those we’ve lost, we carry the hope that their stories will inspire change and help save lives today.
With five years of legalization behind us, the data now speaks for itself. In this issue, Benjamin Adams’ article, Pot Over Pills: How Cannabis Is Winning Utah’s War on Opioids, presents compelling numbers that highlight how cannabis is reducing opioid dependence in our state.
A new cannabis awareness campaign is rolling out across Utah this year, setting the record straight—cannabis isn’t a gateway drug; it’s an exit from harmful pharmaceuticals. Our goal at Salt Baked City isn’t to create a culture of cannabis consumers, as some on Capitol Hill might assume, but to provide transparency and practical education. Whether you use cannabis or not, it’s time to recognize the life-changing benefits it offers to so many.
What makes this campaign even more impactful is the collaboration behind it. Utah’s local medical cannabis companies—often competitors—have come together with Dragonfly Wellness to amplify this message. It’s a reminder of the unity that once drove legalization, and a step toward ensuring Utah’s cannabis program continues to serve those who need it most.
Wishing you high spirits and good vibes—happy toking from the Salt Baked City team.
