Did you know smoking cannabis is not permitted in Utah? In result, patients are required to purchase a cannabis device that warms the material into a vapor without the use of a flame to be considered a legal consumer in the state.

If you’re a seasoned consumer who’s rolled joints for 20 years, buying an electronic device can be intimidating – and they’re a lot more expensive than zig-zags. If you’re new to cannabis, knowing where to start can also be difficult. What should I buy? How does it work? Where can I find these locally? Will I still feel the effects from vapor?

So, if you’re looking for a new smoking device that handles both dry herb and concentrates, we might have stumbled onto your new favorite toy. Our friends at G-Pen, who are famed for their various smoking devices ranging from the Dash, Connect, Elite and Roam have taken things one step further and developed a new electronic dab rig called the Hyer.

These toys aren’t cheap, so our staff jumped in the trenches to do an unboxing before you decide to pull the trigger yourself.

Just like its name, this first of its kind device will give you a Hyer vaporizing experience. After taking the unit out of the box, we noticed it looks like a bigger version of the Connect. The power box in the Hyer is much larger, which allows it to handle both concentrates and flower without multiple recharges.

This Hyer has five different power settings. Each setting is a different color starting from blue (lowest in time and temperature), turquoise, green, yellow and last red (highest time and temperature) allowing consumers to dial down the best combustion setting. This is indicated by the 5 dotted lights found on the body of the unit. There is also another indicator that will tell you how charged your battery is before starting a session. Nobody ever likes getting interrupted in the middle of a session, right?

To turn on the device you hold down the on button for three seconds, and the arrow keys let you dial down desired temperature. Once all settings are dialed to your liking, just load the concentrate or flower into the bowl, add the cap and push the power button twice. Once you feel the device vibrate, you’re ready to begin your session. You will also notice the G on the power box will be lit up the same color as the temperature setting. When your session has timed out or finished, the G will go back to illuminating white.

One of the best aspects we found while playing with the Hyer was the scooper attached to the concentrates cap. The concentrates cap has two airflow holes and another to connect the scoop attachment. This made loading concentrates into the unit simple and clean. Plus, it helped you determine the correct amount of concentrate to use each session. Overfilling with too much material can be the easiest and worst mistake you can make when learning to use the Hyer.

Another valuable feature is the automatic turn off. It’s easy to leave devices on after a spacey session, which can lead to death by fire (highly unlikely) or just wasted battery life.

Although we found a lot of aspects of this new unit we appreciated, we still feel there were some things that need to be addressed in the future. First, the power cord is a bit too long. Although this device was designed to work on any glass bong or dab dig, our water bong is only a foot tall, causing the cord to snake around and snag on things. Plus, we’re a bit clumsy when we’re lit.

Secondly, we purchased the flower cap used to vaporize dry flower separately. If dry flower is your jam, don’t forget to ask for this part when checking out. It’s a bummer getting home with a new toy you aren’t ready to use yet.

The last luxury problem we had was a balancing issue. The power box is pretty heavy, so if your glass piece is small – there’s a good chance it will tip regularly. Although this is a universal device, we recommend buying a new glass piece that can handle the extra weight. Take a look at the photo gallery below to see how the pros handle setup.

Although there are a few things needing to be dialed down, we feel the Hyer was designed for the Utah patient in mind. Stop taking hot dabs and get one of these bad boys for yourself.  Now available at Empire Merchandise or Looking Glass Smoke Shop and Gallery.
